Tags:
At St. Dominic’s Catholic College, the spirit of service and community is alive at the KickStart Breakfast club. The Year 11 Waiora Leaders have transformed the school’s breakfast club throughout 2024. Under the guidance of the Waiora Leaders this initiative has become a social hub for students to connect and share kai.
A New Look Breakfast Club
St. Dominic’s breakfast club runs both before school and at interval. The Waiora Leaders have taken the reins and the KickStart Breakfast club has seen an increase in attendance in 2024. On average, approximately 10 percent of St Dominic’s students attend, and are welcomed to the breakfast club on a daily basis. The Waiora Leaders have created an inviting atmosphere that encourages students to start the day with a nutritious meal and a sense of belonging.
“Turning up to serve makes a difference. Our regular attendance invites others to come to this space to feel included and nourished at the start of their school day”
Waiora Leaders - Delylah Fine, Pualani Fononga and Rosalini Mataia
A Place For All
KickStart Breakfast at St Dominic's has become more than just place to eat; it is central and open to all at 8.00am and 10.50am every day of the school week. The Waiora Leaders have created a warm and inviting atmosphere for St Dominic’s students to enjoy breakfast with others. On occasion, donations of other breakfast foods from the college and other staff members adds some variety to breakfast. A sense of belonging is evident in the smiles, laughter and chatter throughout the room each morning. KickStart Breakfast at St Dominic's is a lively space where Waiora Leaders actively engage with other students to ensure everyone feels included and valued.
“Whanaungatanga and Manakitanga are important concepts that impact on wellbeing. Waiora Leaders promote these concepts within the College. The breakfast club is an important space where we can awhi (support) others”.
Waiora Leader and Student Representative on the Board - Pualani Fononga
Looking Ahead
As the breakfast club continues to grow, the Waiora Leaders will continue this service in 2025. The ongoing success of the KickStart Breakfast programme serves as an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved when students become involved in wellbeing promotion and take the lead with committment and purpose.
