September 2019 KickStart Breakfast Club of the Year - Buller High School

Locations Auckland Categories Awards

It provides the environment for students that is rich in kindness, respect and encouragement. Led by Jude Eakin, Head of Department Food & Nutrition, and an army of keen student volunteers, the students and wider community know there is a warm and inviting place where kai and conversations are to be shared. Opening their doors to the primary school students has positively helped the transition to high school less threating for the younger students. The number of student leaders helping run the breakfast club continues to grow each year, with students not phased by the 7am start. They are only too keen to help be part of a team who proudly create and serve a healthy nutritious breakfast for so many of their peers, teachers and parents.

The success of the Buller High School’s breakfast club comes from backing and support from senior management and the board.

The whole school have pride and a sense of ownership in the club is its strength. Principal Andrew Basher shares the ‘food is secondary to the relationships being forged and friendships made. I have never seen anyone leave the breakfast club unhappy after having spent time in the company of others…the trouble we often face is getting them to leave…I feel privileged as a principal to have such giving and supportive students’.
