August 2018 KickStart Breakfast Club of the Year – Terrance End School

Terrace End School in Palmerston North possesses a special quality that sets its KickStart Breakfast club apart from the rest – flexibility.

Everyone is welcome and breakfast is served at both break times to accommodate students who arrive late.

This flexibility shows pure commitment to helping kids get the best start to the day and is why Terrace End School has been awarded the KickStart Breakfast Club of the Year 2018.

The award recognises a breakfast club that excels in delivering a quality programme for their students, school and community.

Principal Sue Allomes says the students are in a better place for learning and social interaction after a nutritious breakfast.

“Senior students act as positive role models building Tuakana Teina* relationships with children, many who are hungry and some who come for a chat. All are welcome. This positive start to the day empowers children to be in a better place for learning.”

Since joining the programme in 2016, Terrace End School has delivered breakfast to more than 20 students per day, 5 days a week, serving a classic Kiwi favourite of Anchor milk and Sanitarium Weet-Bix.

But it hasn’t been without its challenges. Leaky buildings and limited seating have seen the Terrance End School breakfast club move three times. The award gifts the school $5,000 to go towards their breakfast club and Sue has said she would like to buy new tables and chairs so the whole school can sit together in the hall for shared kai times.
