Motivation behind Riverview School's KickStart Breakfast Club
At Riverview School, Kerikeri, the KickStart Breakfast Club has gone from strength to strength since joining in 2020. The breakfast club fosters a sense of community and engagement among students and staff alike. The success of the club is largely due to the unwavering dedication of the Riverview staff who show up daily to support its operation.
“This can be an integral routine in setting the day up for success”
Eamonn Kelly, Principal.
How KickStart Breakfast Runs at Riverview School
At Riverview School, the KickStart Breakfast Club is a collective effort. Every day, staff members are rostered to run the club, promoting engagement between all tamariki and staff. This inclusive approach ensures that the programme is not just a place share kai, but a hub of interaction and care. Senior Management are also rostered on though often pop by most mornings to check in for a quick connect (and bowl of Weet-Bix and milk!). Their presence is not just supervisory; they actively engage with tamariki, fostering a warm and welcoming environment.
Over the past year, staff have encouraged children to be more independent within the club. Tamariki now serve themselves and take responsibility for cleaning up after their kai. This shift not only teaches valuable life skills but also empowers tamariki, giving them a sense of ownership and pride in their space. The staff's role has evolved to allow more time for meaningful conversations (kōrero) and providing support to tamariki.
Breakfast doesn’t stop when the bell goes at 8.55am. Mr Kelly, Ms Fish, Mrs Hallgath or the incredible team in the office are only too happy to pop some kai in a bowl and check in with tamariki who arrive late to school.
Allowing time for tamariki to pause, connect and get settled along with getting a full puku means they head into class ready for learning!
Motivation Behind the Breakfast Programme
The breakfast programme was already in place when Eamonn started at Riverview School last year.
“KickStart Breakfast was in place when I started at the school. It was for children who didn’t have food. We have amended it to be available for all who need settling, a chat and support for sensory needs.”
By promoting the Breakfast Club as a space for everyone, Riverview School ensures that all students have access to the support they require to start their day positively.
This inclusive and supportive environment is a testament to the staff's commitment to the wellbeing of their students. Staff recognised the broader needs of tamariki and adapted the programme to be more than kai. It is now a vital part of the school’s support system, ensuring that all children have a place where they feel seen, heard, and cared for.
Favourite Aspects of Breakfast Club
One of the most rewarding aspects for staff running KickStart Breakfast is the engagement with tamariki outside the classroom. Being present each morning and witnessing the connections formed between staff and tamariki is incredibly fulfilling.
KickStart Breakfast provides an opportunity for staff to learn more about the children, their needs, and their personalities outside the traditional classroom setting.
These interactions are invaluable. They allow staff to build stronger relationships with the students, fostering trust and a sense of community within the school. Tamariki benefit from this support, feeling more connected and engaged with their school environment.
“We promote the Breakfast club for any child who needs any help or support.”
Positive Changes in Tamariki
Teachers have observed several positive changes in the tamariki who attend the KickStart Breakfast Club. Tamariki who pop along to breakfast club in the mornings have improved concentration and energy levels in the classroom. This foundational support helps them to engage more fully in their learning activities.
Beyond the physical benefits of a good brekkie, the emotional and social aspects of KickStart Breakfast play a crucial role in the children’s development. Regular attendees of the club often show improved social skills, as the environment encourages interaction and cooperation. The sense of routine and stability provided by the Breakfast Club also helps children to feel more secure and settled, which positively influences their behavior and learning in the classroom.
Riverview School’s KickStart Breakfast Club is a shining example of how a simple meal can transform the start of the day, setting tamariki up for success both in and out of the classroom.
