Minimising waste at your KickStart Breakfast club for Food Waste Week NZ 2025
Every year, Food Waste Week NZ shines a spotlight on the importance of reducing food waste, and 2025 is no exception. Here at KickStart Breakfast, we are all about encouraging our schools to be mindful of waste by ordering what they need and being resourceful in sourcing extras to provide additional variety for students. Below are a few simple tips!
Save those crumbs
The last crumbs in the Weet-Bix sleeve don’t need to end up in the rubbish or food scraps bin. Instead, collect the crumbs in a sealed container and use in one of our delicious recipes from our KickStart Breakfast Recipe Booklet. We’ve got you covered with yummy smoothies, Weet-Bix slice, pancakes and more.

Composting and recycling
Set up a food scraps bucket in your breakfast club and find out if there is a suitable alternative for the food waste to head to. We encourage our schools to be kaitiaki and care for the environment. All KickStart Breakfast packaging (Anchor milk and Sanitarium Weet-Bix) can be recycled:
- Brown outer cardboard boxes can be recycled in your usual paper & cardboard recycling
- Weet-Bix sleeves – once cleaned out and free from crumbs, can be placed in soft plastics recycling bins
- Anchor milk cartons – cut, clean and dry thoroughly before either dropping off perfectly prepared milk cartons at a local community collection point or store ready for collection by your Anchor milk at the time of your next milk delivery.
Monitor and adjust
Regularly monitoring of KickStart Breakast products on hand as well as the amount of food waste levels ensures schools can stay on top of their volumes required. We’re aware things in schools need to be flexible which is why we provide shelf stable products.
Participating schools submit a termly product request of what they require for the coming term. We also have some handy tools to support schools in tracking product use to give them a better indication of stock on hand.
As individuals we all play a vital role in coming together to help our future generations reduce food waste. We’d love to hear what food waste minimising strategies your KickStart Breakfast club have implemented! Send us an email at kickstart.breakfast@fonterra.com or reach out to your Relationship Manager.
